The
Good News, The Bad News or The Grown Up News?
As humans we are always more
interested in The Bad News,
so I’ll start with that.
I DON’T HAVE A LOGO
I DON’T HAVE A LETTER HEAD
I DON’T HAVE APPROPRIATE
BUSINESS CARDS
ETC
I’m starting to panic now
because I thought these kinds of things would come naturally to me as I like to
think I’m a creative soul and its all about branding myself. Branding myself
should be easily surely? Well no I’m finding it impossibly hard as I know what
I don’t like but haven’t came across any designs or colours that I like enough to
represent myself with.
I don’t really have a company name either but I do think my name has a
ring to it, what do you think? Stephipbell photography
Anyway
on with The Grown Up News…
Shit is really starting to
get real now; I’ve been enrolled on a business course to learn about setting up
my own business. Don’t get me wrong it is very interesting and a true eye
opener but I just feel the enormous amount of pressure to start up my own
business at the click of a mouse.
At the end of my current
foundation degree course I’m hoping to study the 3rd year still at
Newcastle College – but over the road. During my 3rd year the course
teaches me how to set up on my own, we work with graphics, designers all sorts
of creative. So why should I rush around all my business stuff now? Why spend a
fortune on business cards when I’ll change the design in a couple months?
Anyway basically we got
given some homework; this is what my email contained.
Hi all
Now as a reminder for your homework
1) Create a
customer profile using Kiplings (Who What Where When How and Why) tool – do
this for yourself and one for your imagined customer who just keeps coming back
for more
2) If you can do
the above and for an extra bonus – do this for 2 competitors or forms of
competition too
3) Prepare
yourself to pitch in front of Richard Branson, Alan Sugar and/ or Peter
Jackson. By prepare I mean bring in some magazines etc that you are prepared to
cut up to make a poster and ready yourself for being video’d too.
4) Have a look at
the Business Plan template attached and see if you can start this off
I hope you enjoyed the session and
really good work

I love how they are very organized but its panicked me massively. Do I
turn up tomorrow unprepared or do I bottle it and not go. I know what I’ll do
in the end, I’ll go and face the music.
Honesty is the best policy.
Finally
I’ve saved The Good News till last…
I’ve decided what I want to
do for my portfolio. I want to shoot still life, food and drink to be exact. My
idea is to lay out my portfolio using local businesses and produce images for
my portfolio (networking) and for them as a thank you. Kind of a two birds one
stone situation but also if I can get some lovely portraits on the side as I do
still like portraiture.
Don’t get me wrong I like
the fashion and working with people but I don’t want to rely on working in a
team with make up artists and hair people just because I’ve been so let down in
the past that I want to shoot objects and exceed. I believe practice makes
perfect so the more I shoot the more I’ll improve.
I had a shoot yesterday
(Monday 28th January 2013) and it went down very successfully. I
captured some amazing shots. I had a
good friend assist me and she herself was not a photographer or in the creative
industry so I felt the lighting and composition was all down to me which I
liked but then having someone else’s opinion helped massively. Sounds odd but I
liked being the only photographer there as it tested what I really do know,
having another photographer there sometimes makes me feel intimidated and I
hide behind them.
Anyway I will shortly post
up the photographs from yesterday, I have to admit though the shoot really paid
off and even if they aren’t perfect its given me the drive and confidence back!
